Nurse-Family Partnership:

The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is a nationwide, nurse home-visiting program committed to improving the health, well-being and self-sufficiency of low income, first-time mothers and their children (national NFP web site ). The program is voluntary and free of charge.

NFP has been rigorously evaluated in long-term studies published in peer-reviewed medical and public health journals.

  • Consistent effects: better prenatal health; fewer childhoodinjuries; increased intervals between births; increasedmaternal employment; improved school readiness
  • Long-term follow-up shows: 72% fewer convictions among mothers; 48% reduction in child abuse and neglect; 59% reduction in arrests among children

From its initial implementation in Jamaica, Queens, in 2003, NFP has expanded to all five boroughs. Additionally, a Targeted Citywide Initiative team of nurses serves teens in foster care, women and teens in homeless shelters, and women at Rikers Island jail. BMIRH provides assistance, training, coordination and fundraising for the continued growth and sustainability of the NFP program.
