Good Choice is a nutrition initiative that makes it easier for distributors to highlight healthier products. New York City food distributors can use Good Choice to identify healthier items in their inventory that meet the NYC Food Standards. In turn, their customers, including restaurants, hospitals, senior centers and day care centers, can more easily find and purchase healthier ingredients.
Why Good Choice?
Most New Yorkers are overweight or obese, and many have high blood pressure. A healthy diet plays an important role in controlling these conditions and is important for good overall health.
Good Choice nutrition criteria include limits on calories, fat, sugar and sodium. The majority of Good Choice categories address sodium limits given the high intake of sodium in the American diet and the related health risks. Most Americans eat more sodium than is recommended for a healthy diet, and the majority of the sodium in our diets comes from processed foods.
Many foodservice venues want to offer healthier items. Good Choice addresses healthier food options at the distributor or wholesale level – a part of the food supply that is invisible to most consumers, but critical to ensuring that healthier options are available while eating out.
Good Choice Nutrition Criteria
The Good Choice nutrition criteria is based on the NYC Food Standards, which were established in 2008 for all public hospitals and city agencies, including senior and day care centers serving meals and snacks. The criteria include 25 food categories, such as pre-packaged snacks, sliced bread and salad dressing, and help identify which items within these categories are healthier choices.
