Over 700,000 New Yorkers have diabetes — almost a third don't know they have it.
In New York City, 40% of elementary school children are overweight, which puts them at risk for diabetes. Uncontrolled diabetes can cause blindness, end-stage renal disease—which may require dialysis—and lower extremity amputations in adults.
