On September 19, 2008, Mayor Bloomberg signed Executive Order 122 (PDF) to establish the New York City Food Standards. The New York City Food Standards were created with the goal of improving the health of all New Yorkers served by City agencies by decreasing risk of chronic disease related to poor nutritional intake.
New York City health statistics show:
- 58% of adults and 40% of elementary school children are overweight or obese.
- One in three adult New Yorkers has diabetes or pre-diabetes.
- Nearly 29% of adult New Yorkers report that they have been diagnosed with high blood pressure.
Use these standards to make your workplace or neighborhood organization healthier! While these standards were developed for New York City agencies, we recommend and encourage their use in other environments such as faith-based organizations, private businesses, non-profit organizations and other community centers.

Standards for Meals/Snacks Purchased and Served
New York City has established nutrition standards for all foods purchased and served by City agencies. The standards apply to approximately 260 million meals and snacks served annually at schools, senior centers, homeless shelters, child care centers, after school programs, correctional facilities, public hospitals, and other New York City agency facilities and programs. The Standards for Meals/Snacks Purchased and Served were enacted September 2008 and were revised in October 2011.
Healthy Eating Posters and Fact Sheets
The New York City Health Department developed posters and fact sheets to educate clients about the benefits of healthy eating and make them aware of the changes to the meals and snacks served at City agencies.
Standards for Beverage Vending Machines
New York City has established standards for all beverage vending machines contracted by City agencies. The Standards for Beverage Vending Machines were enacted May 2009, pursuant to Executive Order 122.
Standards for Food Vending Machines
New York City has established standards for all food vending machines on City property. The Standards for Food Vending Machines were enacted December 2011, pursuant to Executive Order 122.
Standards for Meetings and Events
New York City has established standards for food served at meetings and events sponsored by City agencies. The Standards for Meetings and Events were enacted March 2013, pursuant to Executive Order 122.
Standards for Commissaries
New York City has established standards for commissaries in City correctional facilities. The Standards for Commissaries were enacted March 2013, pursuant to Executive Order 122.
