Mission Statement
The primary purpose of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects participating in research activities. Accordingly, the mission of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's IRB (NYCDOHMH) is to protect the rights and welfare of subjects involved in research activities conducted under the jurisdiction of DOHMH. Research studies involving DOHMH facilities, personnel, data or client population, should be reviewed by the IRB.
To accomplish this mission, the IRB shall ensure that the
- physical, psychological and social risks to the
subjects are minimized, and if present, to make sure they are justified by the
importance of the research and/or the knowledge to be gained from such
research; and
- potential and participating subjects are adequately and appropriately informed of the nature of the research, the risks involved and their rights as research subjects.
Furthermore, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's IRB seeks to ensure that DOHMH, affiliate institutions and investigators in the research community comply with the federal regulations and ethical standards, which govern human subject research regardless of funding. This will be accomplished by providing educational training sessions and or materials to the members of the DOHMH research community.
