Division of Disease Control

Safeguards the health of New Yorkers through the identification, surveillance, treatment, control and prevention of infectious diseases.

Bureau of Communicable Disease
Aims to rapidly recognize and respond to communicable disease threats in order to prevent or control ongoing transmission. Conducts surveillance for 73 infectious diseases or conditions as mandated by the New York City Health Code. Detects and investigates communicable disease outbreaks. Educates and provides consultation to the public and medical community on communicable disease issues.

Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control
Aims to prevent new HIV infections and reduce morbidity and mortality among HIV-infected persons. Achieves this through close partnerships with community-based organizations and through the following programs: HIV /AIDS Epidemiology and Field Services; HIV/AIDS Care, Treatment and Housing; and HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs.

Bureau of Immunization
Aims to prevent the occurrence and transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases in children and adults through immunization, education, health system support and surveillance. The Bureau runs 3 immunization clinics and monitors school vaccination compliance through the Citywide Immunization Registry (CIR).

Bureau of Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention and Control
Aims to improve the sexual health of all New Yorkers. Provides direct clinical services and partner services, monitors disease trends, provides education and training to providers and community groups, conducts research and develops policies to improve sexual health and wellness. The Bureau’s 9 STD clinics offer all New Yorkers free and confidential HIV testing, as well as screening and treatment for STDs.

Bureau of Tuberculosis Control
Aims to prevent the spread of TB and eliminate it as a public health problem in New York City. Conducts surveillance, investigates outbreaks and monitors patient care. Directs screening and case management services at 5 chest centers in NYC.

Bureau of Public Health Laboratory
Aims to provide quality laboratory testing services which address the needs of the NYC DOHMH and its community partners as they respond to clinical and environmental public health concerns. In collaboration with State, Federal and private research facilities, provides laboratory diagnosis of causative agents of disease and environmental hazards.
