NOW APPEARING AT A MENU NEAR YOU:
CALORIE INFORMATION!
A federal court has cleared the way for New York City to enact its new calorie-posting regulation. On April 29, the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit refused to block the measure while the restaurant industry pursues a third lawsuit to overturn it. New York City law now requires chain restaurants to post calorie counts on menus and menu boards, enabling consumers to make more informed choices. The measure took effect on April 30. The Health Department is now issuing citations to noncompliant restaurants, but fines won’t be issued before July 18, 2008. Nearly a quarter of they city’s chain outlets are already complying.

PCBs in New York City School Buildings
Lab tests done by a local newspaper recently found PCBs in samples of caulking from the outside of some New York City school buildings. Parents and teachers may be understandably concerned because exposure to high levels of PCBs can pose serious health risks. But the presence of PCBs does not always indicate a health hazard. PCBs in intact building materials do not result in significant exposure, and they are unlikely to cause health effects.
