Established in 1892, the Public Health Laboratory was the world's first Municipal Bacteriological Laboratory. In the century since its first campaign, to control diptheria in New York City, the bureau has expanded to provide a wide variety of clinical and environmental laboratory testing services. Today, the Public Health Laboratory performs a total of over two million tests on the more than four hundred thousand specimens it receives each year.

To ensure the health of all New York City residents by providing quality laboratory testing services which address the needs of the NYC DOHMH and its partner agencies as they respond to clinical and environmental public health concerns.
