Bureau of Correctional Health Services (CHS)
CHS is responsible for medical, mental health, dental, discharge planning, and transitional health care services in the City's correctional facilities, which have over 100,000 admissions per year and house roughly 13,500 inmates and detainees on a given day. These services are provided directly and through contracts monitored by CHS.
The Office of Correctional Public Health (OCPH), is responsible for the planning, implementation, and oversight of public health-related programs and services in New York City jails. Jails offer a unique opportunity to facilitate improved inmate health and better disease control in the community by providing health care and disease prevention counseling to inmates before they are released. OCPH's mission is to enhance the public health focus in jail services to improve the health of both incarcerated populations and the larger New York City community.
