Request for Proposals
Use of the NYC HANES Biological Specimen Repository
Solicitation:
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is soliciting outside research proposals to use the NYC HANES serologic and urine repositories for public health research.
What is NYC HANES?
The New York City Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NYC HANES) was a community-based health survey conducted by the NYC Health Department from June through December 2004. NYC HANES measured key health indicators in a representative sample of 1,999 NYC adults aged 20 and older (using a multistage sample design) using a detailed health interview, a brief physical exam, and collection of blood and urine samples. See our web site for the survey instruments and a list of exam and laboratory measures collected (survey components
).
Why are we Soliciting Proposals?
At this time, the NYC Health Department is soliciting outside research proposals to use the NYC HANES repository to stimulate investigation of issues of local or national public health significance. Investigators planning to submit proposals should carefully review the NYC HANES Repository Use Procedures
. All submitted proposals will be reviewed by the NYC HANES Technical Panel, a multi-disciplinary panel of NYC Health Department scientists.
What is the Repository Comprised of?
Serum and urine specimens were collected from most consenting participants (n=1615 for sera and n= 1663 for urine) and are stored at the NYC Health Department's Public Health Laboratory. For each consenting participant, approximately 3ml of sera (in 6 vials of 0.5 ml each) and 25 ml of urine are stored at -70 degrees Celsius.
When must I submit a Proposal?
Proposals must be received before April 1st, 2008. The Technical Panel will review proposals during the month of April, and notifications will be sent in May. Proposals received after April 1st, 2008 will be reviewed in 2009, if additional sera are available, unless special approval is obtained from the Health Commissioner. Decisions on submitted proposals will be sent to the principal investigator by May 30th, 2008.
