NYCHA Senior Survey

The Health of Older Adults
in New York City Public Housing

The Research:
New York City Housing Authority Senior Survey
Health of NYCHA Older Adults Report

More than 61,500 New Yorkers aged 65 and older live in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) public housing developments, and age group projections suggest that the growth of this group in public housing will outpace that of NYC’s older adult population. This large and growing population of older New Yorkers presents tremendous opportunities to target health, social, and financial services to support healthy aging in the City. In 2009, NYCHA with the Health Department conducted the NYCHA Senior Survey – a large, representative survey of NYCHA residents aged 65 and older – in order to assess the health of NYCHA residents aged 65 and older, as well as their access to and use of health care and community services.

The Report:
Health of Older Adults in New York City Public Housing

The report Health of Older Adults in New York City Public Housing is the result of collaboration between NYCHA, the Health Department, the NYC Department for the Aging (DFTA), and the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Public Health. Together, these agencies analyzed and interpreted findings from the NYCHA Senior Survey and identified next steps for City government, as well as concrete recommendations for the wider community. Many of the next steps for these agencies were developed within the framework of NYCHA’s Plan to Preserve Public Housing.
