NYC Condoms; Get Some!

Breakage and Slippage

Even when used carefully, condoms can
occasionally break or slip off the penis.
If that happens, follow the steps below
and contact us right away—we can help.

We take these incidents very seriously and will thoroughly investigate condom breakage to find out what happened.

If your condom breaks:

Step 1: Stay calm. Stay calm. Do not douche the vagina or anus (urination or a bowel movement is okay).

Step 2: Call 311 or (646) 253-5711, or email condoms@health.nyc.gov. Someone from the Health Department will help you file a report. Give them your contact information for any future follow-up on your report. Remember, we can help you better if you have:

  • The lot number on the back of the condom package
  • Some details about what happened (did the condom break before, during or after sex?)

Keep the condom wrapper and any other condoms that came in the same box or package.

Step 3:
Ask the 311 operator about your options—we can help you by:

  • Giving you a list of clinics that provide free, confidential HIV/STD testing.
  • Providing information on Plan B (a pill for emergency pregnancy prevention). You can also visit The Emergency Contraception Website for emergency contraception.
  • Providing other information on post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), precautions and medications you can take to avoid getting pregnant, HIV or other STDs.

See Resources for more information.

Know your status! If you’re sexually active it’s a good idea to get tested periodically for HIV and other STDs.
