Case Studies

Case Presentation #1

During an office visit with a new patient, Mrs. Smith tells you that every time her two-year-old daughter, Beverley, has a cold, she has severe coughing and wheezing that lasts for two or three weeks. She had approximately three to four such colds in the last year; the most recent occurred a month ago. Beverley does not have any symptoms now, but Mrs. Smith is worried and asks you for help.

Bullet What treatment plan would you recommend to Mrs. Smith for Beverley's asthma?

Bullet What do you think would be the greatest challenge in getting Mrs. Smith to follow the treatment plan?

Case Presentation #2

Don Walker is six years old and coughs and wheezes several times a week. The symptoms occur when he runs or is near a cat, but are mild and usually subside within an hour. The Walker family does not have any pets in their home. Mrs. Walker has never had to take Don to the emergency room, but she tries to keep him from running too much to prevent these symptoms.

Bullet What treatment plan would you recommend to Mrs. Walker for Don's asthma?

Bullet What do you think would be the greatest challenge in getting Mrs. Walker to follow the treatment plan?

Case Presentation #3

Maria Cruz is 10 months old, and has repeated episodes of wheezing and difficulty breathing. When you prescribe albuterol syrup, her symptoms got better, but she was fussy, couldn't sleep, and vomited. Mrs. Cruz is getting frustrated. You have already completed an extensive work up and have ruled out other causes for the breathing difficulties.

Bullet What treatment plan would you recommend to Mrs. Cruz for Maria's asthma?

Bullet What do you think would be the greatest challenge in getting Mrs. Cruz to follow the treatment plan?
