Physical Activity and Nutrition

What Everyone Should Know

Recommendations

Weight problems occur when people eat more calories than they use in daily activity and exercise. Here are some proven tips for reaching a healthy weight:

Increase Activity -
Make NY Your Gym
  • Get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity (such as a brisk walk) at least 5 days a week. More is even better, but any amount is better than none.
  • Reduce screen-time (video, computer and television-viewing hours)
  • Walk (with your children, friends, co-workers)
    whenever possible
  • Encourage active play-time as a family

  • Have healthy snack foods available
  • Switch from whole milk to low-fat (1%) or skim (fat-free) milk for adults and children ages 2 and older
