A recent study of NYC school children from kindergarten through eighth grade found that 40% — more than 250,000 kids — are overweight or obese. The numbers in some neighborhoods, such as Harlem, Washington Heights and Williamsburg are even higher — 48%, 47% and 46% respectively. Green Carts in these neighborhoods are helping to encourage kids to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Green Carts Outreach Coordinator Peggy Leggat goes into local schools to teach kids about eating these healthy choices. See the story on CNN.

NYC Media taped a segment about kids visiting their local Green Cart and learning about the nutritional value of the fresh fruits and vegetables. And having fun! After the kids learn about the great fresh produce at these carts, they often ask their parents to shop there — the whole family benefits. Watch the video.

The Citizens Committee for Children released a report based on data collected during the first year of the Green Carts program, showing the positive effective of Green Carts on nearby communities. They also made suggestions on how to improve the program — including increasing the number of vendors that accept Electronic Transfer Benefits and WIC allotments as well as expanding public marketing of the program.  

Green Bucks, a public-private initiative to promote healthier food options for South Bronx residents kicks off in Mott Haven. To encourage better eating habits, students from SoBRO's Adult Education program will receive free Green Buck coupons in $1 increments. The coupons are redeemable for fruits and vegetables from participating NYC Green Cart vendors. Students will receive a map of participating Green Cart vendors in the area. Vendors will be stationed at the center for the launch. Read more about this.
