Children in Disasters: Hospital Guidelines for Pediatrics Preparedness
Children in Disasters: Hospital Guidelines for Pediatric Preparedness, 3rd edition, November 2008
Beginning in September 2004 through 2006, HEPP began an intensive effort to assist hospitals to prepare for pediatric victims and their families during disasters by creating a working group to address this important area.
The Central Brooklyn Center for Bioterrorism Preparedness Planning and the New York Center for Terrorism/Casualty Preparedness have been the institutional leaders in this initiative. All materials have been reviewed by the NYC DOHMH Pediatric Disaster Advisory Group, a committee of pediatric experts, social workers, and emergency planners from across the city.

Pediatric Disaster Hospital Tabletop Exercise Toolkit
This pediatric tabletop exercise emphasizes the importance of using a multidisciplinary approach to respond to a pediatric disaster and contains exercises designed to encourage the free and open exchange of ideas in a low-stress environment. The materials familiarize participants with roles, functions, plans, policies and procedures within an institution and also provide the opportunity for institutions to identify areas of weakness. The toolkit supplies all the materials needed for a hospital to conduct a tabletop exercise using a predominantly pediatric population in the scenario. The scenario has been created to test the ability of a hospital with or without pediatric services, and may be modified to increase complexity for highly sophisticated pediatric speciality hospitals.
HEPP contracted the Center for Pediatric Emergency Medicine (CPEM) to create a Pediatric Explosive Tabletop Exercise for hospitals. The scenario and exercise was piloted in four NYC hospitals from 2006-2008.
Hospital planners should download both the toolkit and the PowerPoint template. Materials should be modified as per the instructions detailed in the toolkit.

New York City Hospital Pediatric Resource Directory
New York City Hospital Pediatric Directory, April, 2009
The New York City Hospital Pediatric Resource Directory provides New York City (NYC) hospitals, healthcare facilities, and NYC response agencies with a comprehensive resource of pediatric services offered by NYC Hospitals.
The directory is divided into two sections. The first section focuses on the twenty-six NYC Hospitals with Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs), providing detail on critical care services offered at these hospitals that includes information and instructions on admission and/or transfer of critically ill pediatric patients to hospitals with PICUs. The second section includes fifteen NYC Hospitals that do not have PICUs, but do accept transfers of pediatric patients, either into the hospital’s pediatric inpatient unit or a subspecialty unit.
Data for this project were collected by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Program during 2006-2008, funded by the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Grant Number U3RHS07565.
The information presented in this resource will be updated on a yearly basis. Please send any updates to the Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Program at hepp@health.nyc.gov. The same email address can be used to request a hard copy of the Directory.
