A Property’s Borough, Block and Lot Number
Every parcel of land in New York City has a unique set of 3 numbers that comprise its Borough, Block, and Lot (BBL) designation. BBLs are used to identify property for tax purposes at Finance, for zoning and construction at the Departments of Buildings and City Planning, and by other City agencies for other tracking purposes. It is helpful for property owners contacting a city agency about their property to know their BBL.
The Borough number is always first:
1 = Manhattan
2 = Bronx
3 = Brooklyn
4 = Queens
5 = Staten Island
The Block number is second and can be up to 5 digits. The lot number is last and can be up to 4 digits.
Finance references the BBL on virtually all property-related correspondence, and you will also find it on your Statement of Account.
