New York City Department of Correction Correction Explorers
In 1997, the New York City Department of Correction, in conjunction with the Learning for Life Program of the Boy Scouts of America's Greater New York Councils, launched the Correction Law Enforcement Exploring Program. The program is designed to enrich the personal and professional development of young men and women 14 through 20 years of age. There is also a Correction Explorers Investigator Program similar to that of the Explorers, which is designed for young people 10 to 13 years of age. The programs purpose is to provide experiences that help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers discover the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and communities.
The Correction Exploring program is based on active relationships between youth, the Department of Correction, community organizations, and various other law enforcement agencies such as the NYPD, US Customs, DEA, and the FBI. The result is a program of activities that help youth pursue their special interests, grow, and develop.
The Correction Exploring program has five areas of emphasis: life skills, citizenship, character education, leadership experience, and preparation for productive careers. Its paramilitary approach stresses discipline through training, high standards, and personal responsibility.
The Correction Exploring program boosts self-confidence, encourages the skill and desire to help others, and helps youth make ethical choices.
