Buildings Department Accepts Fire Safety Directors Association Award
Honored for Fire Safety and Structural Integrity Provisions in New NYC Construction Codes
Buildings Commissioner Patricia J. Lancaster, FAIA today accepted the Fire Safety Directors Association Award for leading the multi-disciplinary team of 400 professionals who worked over the past four years to modernize the New York City Building Code. Submitted by Mayor Bloomberg to the City Council last week, the new NYC Construction Codes include key provisions to strengthen fire safety and structural integrity requirements for new construction. Commissioner Lancaster was joined by Fire Department Chief Patrick Savage, who was honored for his role in the Code revision effort, to accept the award during the Association's annual New York Spring Seminar at 1 Chase Manhattan Plaza.
“This year really is a year of 'firsts' for the Buildings Department - today marks the first day the Buildings Department has been honored with this award, and just last week the Mayor announced the first comprehensive modernization to the City's Building Code in nearly 40 years,” said Commissioner Patricia J. Lancaster. “The new NYC Construction Codes put safety front and center by introducing requirements for smokeproof stair enclosures, enhanced standpipe system designs, wider stairwells, and impact resistant stairway and elevator shaft enclosures. While some may argue the proposed fire safety provisions are costly, I am confident that we have achieved a code that enhances safety while providing opportunities for cost savings. I am proud to accept this award today and would like to dedicate it to my staff and the professionals who volunteered over 300,000 hours of their time to the code revision effort.”
“I congratulate Commissioner Lancaster and Chief Savage for their efforts to revise the Building Code and improve the safety of our city's buildings. Special thanks to Commissioner Lancaster for her extraordinary leadership in building consensus among the many different industry, government and private interests who participated in this daunting task to improve and modernize the Code,” said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.
