STATEMENT FROM COMMISSIONER LANCASTER ON OVERWHELMING PASSAGE OF
NEW NYC CONSTRUCTION CODES

“Today's Council vote represents a monumental step toward ensuring New York City's economic prosperity and long-term vitality through improved building safety, enhanced enforcement tools, opportunities for construction cost savings, and incentives for innovative and sustainable building. I applaud the City Council for having the foresight to make a decision that will elevate the quality of construction practices and enhance the quality of life for the present and future generations of New Yorkers by passing Introductory Number 578A. I would like to thank the 400 stakeholders from industry, government, labor, real estate, and academia who volunteered over 300,000 hours in time to this colossal effort, and extend my thanks to Speaker Quinn and her staff, Chairperson Dilan for his leadership, and Chairperson Oddo for his continued support as we tackled the intricate and complex task of creating a new building code that advances safety, savings, and innovation.”
