Information on the Electrical Code Revisions

In 2001, New York City replaced its antiquated electrical code with the 1999 National Electrical Code (NEC), amended for New York City. Under the three year review and revision functions of the program established to revise the Construction Codes, the 2005 NEC, with New York City amendments, was adopted in 2006.

In 2008, the electrical code revision committees, the Electrical Code Revision and Interpretation Committee (E.C.R.I.C.) and the Electrical Code Advisory Committee (E.C.A.C.), will begin reviewing the 2008 NEC to draft new local amendments, ensuring that New York City remains on the cutting edge of technology and electrical engineering.

Additionally, E.C.R.I.C. meets throughout the year providing interpretations and clarifications of the Electrical Code Technical Standards in response to requests from the electrical industry. The Electrical Advisory Board also meets throughout the year and reviews requests for special installations, the use of new electrical equipment and material and service installations over 1000 KVA and all high voltage (over 600 volts) jobs.

2010 Electrical Code Revision Cycle
To ensure that New York City is on the cutting edge of technology and electrical engineering, every three years the Buildings Department adopts the most current National Electrical Code (NEC) with New York City amendments. The technical review of the 2008 NEC is now under way and we are soliciting proposals. Submit the  proposal form (ED-77) (69 kb) by July 31, 2008 to suggest a code change for the 2010 NYC Electrical Code.
