Supported scaffolds consist of one or more platforms supported by rigid poles, posts, and frames. Supported scaffolds must comply with the New York City Construction Codes.
Installing Supported Scaffolds
Less than 40 feet - A permit is not required. If the scaffold will be constructed on a sidewalk shed, the scaffold must be designed by an engineer and the plans must be available on site.
40 feet or greater - A permit is required.
Training Requirements and Certifications
- Workers:
- Must complete a 4-hour training course by a Department-approved provider and receive a Certificate of Completion
- 4-hour refresher course required every 4 years
- Erectors:
- Must complete a 32-hour training course by a Department-approved provider and receive a Certificate of Completion to work on supported scaffolds that require a permit
- 8-hour refresher course required every 4 years

Maintenance
All supported scaffolds must be inspected on a daily basis and the results of these inspections must be recorded in a maintenance log, readily available on-site at all times.
