How to Become a NYC Licensed Class A or B Hoist Machine Operator

STEP 1: Class A and B Hoist Machine License Criteria 

To become a New York City licensed Class A or B Hoist Machine Operator, you must: 

  • Meet the License Qualifications (see Step 2)
     
  • You must apply for and take the Hoist Machine Operator Exam (see Step 3)
     
  • You must apply for a Class A or B Hoist Machine Operator License (see Step 4)

STEP 2: Class A and B Hoist Machine License Qualifications

All applicants applying for a Class A or B Hoist Machine Operator License must meet the following qualifications: 

  • Be at least 18 years or older
     
  • Be able to read, write and understand the English language

Class A applicants must also meet the following qualification:

  • 3 years of experience (minimum) in New York City under the direct and continuing supervision of a licensed Hosting Machine Operator within the five years prior to applying for a license

    Documentation proving you meet the requirement
    includes payroll records and/or notarized 
    or sealed letters from your employers detailing the type
    of work you performed.
     

Class B (Endorsement on the Basic License) applicants must also meet the following qualifications: 

  • Have a valid Class A License. Applicants must bring a copy of their license with them when they submit their license application to the Department of Buildings
     
  • 2 years of experience (minimum) in New York City operating the equipment for which you are applying for under the direct and continuing supervision of a licensed Class B Hosting Machine Operator

    Documentation proving you meet the requirement includes payroll records and/or notarized 
    or sealed letters from your employers detailing the type of work you performed.
     

STEP 3: Class A and B Hoist Machine Operator Exam 

To become a licensed Class A Hoist Machine Operator you must take the Hoisting Machine Operator exam. 

To become a Class B Hoist Machine Operator you must take the Hoisting Machine Operator Endorsement (HMO Class B) exam. 

Both exams are administered by the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). To view the exam dates, visit DCAS’ website at www.nyc.gov/dcas.  

To apply for the exams you must: 

  • Complete the Hoisting Machine Operator / Hoisting Machine Operator (Endorsement) exam application (the application is the same for both licenses). The application is available on DCAS’s website at www.nyc.gov/dcas or you can pick an application up at:

  • You must include all documentation proving you meet the required work/educational experience requirements with your application (see the requirements in Step 2)
     
  • Submit your application, required documentation and the exam fee – $200 for Class A License and $225 for a Class B License (money order only) – to:

    Division of Citywide Personnel Services – Application Unit
    1 Centre Street, 14th Floor
    New York, New York 10007

 Taking the exams: 

  • The Hoisting Machine Operator exam – for Class A Applicants – consists of two sections, a written section and a practical section
     
  • The written section is a multiple-choice test
     
  • Reference materials are not permitted during the written section of the exam
     
  • The Hoisting Machine Operator Endorsement exam (HMO Class B) – for Class B applicants – consists only of a practical section
     
  • Once you pass the exam, you will receive a letter notifying you of your exam score within approximately 5 weeks from the date of the exam 

STEP 4: Class A and B Hoist Machine Operator Application 

Once you pass the exam, the Department of Buildings Licensing Unit will notify you in writing that you are eligible to apply for a Class A or B Hoist Machine Operator License. 

The notice will include: 

  • A list of all the required documents you must submit to the Licensing Unit 

To submit the application you must: 

  • Complete the LIC2 application
     
  • The application must be typewritten
     
  • Gather all the required documents
     
  • Make an appointment to submit the application and all the required documents with the Licensing Unit at 212-566-4100. Calls must be made between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday
     
  • Bring the following with you to your appointment:
     
    • Your completed application
       
    • All the required documentation
       
    • Your license fee of $150 (money order only)
