When will the Department begin to offer Filing Representative Training Courses?

The Dept. of Buildings Filing Representative Training courses will begin on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 9:00am.

What are the hours and frequency of the Training Courses?

The training hours are from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, except holidays. There will be 2 sessions per day (1 Morning Session, 1 Afternoon Session). Currently, ‘100’ series courses are available at 9AM and ‘200’ series courses are available at 1:30PM.

How do I register for training?

Filing Representatives, with current and active registrations with the Department, will receive an initial email with an invitation, to the email address on file, directing them to login to the Department’s Online Filing Representative Training Course Scheduling Tool to book a training course.

What do I do if I did not receive an invitation to schedule for the Filing Representative Training Course?

Filing Representatives with current, active registrations with the Department who did not receive the invitation must go to the Dept. of Buildings website and use the Online Filing Representative Training Course Scheduling Tool and complete the new user form before scheduling a training course.

My co-worker(s) and I share an email address, how do we sign up for courses?

Each representative must sign-up for classes using a unique email address. If an email address is shared for work purposes, the remaining representatives can register under different email addresses and will still receive credit for courses attended.

Who is required to take these courses?

All Filing Representatives, with a current and active registration with the Department, must attend the training courses specific to their Class designation to be eligible to renew their registrations. Applicants applying for new Filing Representatives registrations are not required to attend training in order to obtain a new Filing Representative ID.

If you are a Class 1 Filing Representative, with current and active registration with the Department, you are required to take 16 hours of training courses to be qualified for registration renewal. Courses which will fulfill the 16 hour training requirement begin with the number ‘1’.

If you are a Class 2 Code and Zoning Representative, with current and active registration with the Department, you are required to take 36 hours of training courses to be qualified for registration renewal. Class 2 representatives are required to take all available courses.

Can I take the courses in any order or do I need to take them in consecutive order?

Courses can be taken in any order, there are no pre-requisites.

How long will the classes be offered?

Courses will be offered through the end of the registration renewal period.

When is the last day I can register for a class?

Individual course registration closes 48 hours prior to the start of the particular course session.

I forgot my password, how do I reset it?

Access the Online Course Scheduling Tool at: and click the Log In link. On the Log In page, click the ‘Forgot Password?’ link at the bottom of the window and follow the instructions.

If I am unable to attend a class I registered for how do I reschedule the class?

Access the Online Course Registration Tool at:, click the Log In link and enter your log in credentials. After logging in, mouse over your name in the upper left hand corner and click ‘My Appointments’. Find the appointment you would like to reschedule under the ‘Upcoming’ tab, and click the Reschedule link and follow the instructions.

How early should I arrive before class starts?

Please arrive at the training location at least 30 minutes before the listed course time to allow for time to pass through security and to check-in. Filing Representatives that arrive more than 15 minutes after the listed course time may lose their course reservations, and may not be admitted into the course.

Please also note there have been long security lines to get into the Brooklyn Municipal Building at 210 Joralemon Street, so please plan accordingly.

Do I need to bring a specific type of identification with me to the course?

Yes. All Class 1 Filing Representatives and Class 2 Code and Zoning Representatives must present their NYC Dept. of Buildings Filing Representative picture identification card to the DOB staff member or security guard on-site to be admitted into the classroom.

If I complete the classes for the Class 2 Filing Representative Training, can I become a Class 2 Filing Representative?

No, the training courses are required for renewal of existing Filing Representative registrations. The training does not count towards the education requirements necessary to be met to apply for a Class 2 Filing Representative license.

If I take the same course (e.g., Course 101) multiple times, will they all count towards my required training hours?

No, each individual course that is included in the course curriculum for your particular Class must be taken to fulfill your training requirements

I am attempting to schedule my courses online, but all available courses appear to be fully booked. How can I attend the currently available courses if I cannot book a reservation?

If you are unable to book a reservation for a course online, you may still be able to attend the course as a walk-in.

Each course session will allow for up to 10 representatives to sign-up for potential walk-in appointments. Representatives who wish to attempt to obtain a walk-in appointment can see the security guard on the 7th floor, starting at 8:30AM, for the walk-in signup sheet for the classes being offered on that particular day. The walk-in signup sheet will be capped at 10 representatives per course session. Walk-ins will be seated, on a first-come first-serve basis, once all representatives with a reservation are seated.

I was unable to book or attend a Course which is currently no longer available, how can I make-up the Course I missed?

Beginning in the Spring of 2014, courses previously offered will be offered again on a rotating basis. Please check the scheduling tool for information on the availability of specific courses.

Can I download a copy of the presentations being shown during course sessions?

Yes, all presentations which have been offered to date are available for download (in PDF Format) by clicking the ‘Download Course Materials’ link next to the desired course listed at the bottom of the Filing Representative Training Landing Page:

I tried to book a course online, but I got a message asking me to call or email the Department to schedule my courses, what should I do?

If you are seeing this message, this means that the online booking functionality is temporarily unavailable for maintenance. Please try to book your course again later. Maintenance windows do not generally last for more than an hour. No course bookings will be accepted via phone or email. If you are seeing this message for longer than two hours, please email
