Inspections and Tests

Department Inspections

The Department performs one periodic inspection of devices every twelve months.

Private Inspections

Owners must have their devices inspected annually and an additional inspection every three or five years, depending on the type of device.

Annual Test (Category 1)
Three Year Test (Category 3) Water Hydraulic Elevators Only
Five Year Test (Category 5)

The Department updates all inspection results and posts them online, via the Buildings Information System (BIS). Building owners must keep a record of the inspection certificates in each elevator. If the inspection certificates are kept in the building management office, there must be a sign in the elevator indicating the location of the inspection certificates.

Upon request, inspections and tests can be expedited for high-rise buildings, schools, buildings involving the disabled and the elderly, single elevator buildings or elevators serving one section of the building.
