Date: | March 17, 1998 | Subject: | Identification of Crane/Derrick Structural Parts | Effective: | July 1, 1998 | Purpose: | To establish a standard means to identify the tower, boom, jib, struts and other structural parts used in fixed or climbing tower cranes, mobile cranes, derricks and other forms of hoist equipment for inspection and record keeping purposes. | Specifics: | - Identification of structural parts used in hoist equipment:
Tower, boom, jib and other structural parts that can be broken down or disassembled shall be identified by the owner of the equipment, or by his/her designated representative (i.e. welding inspection agencies). Acceptable IDs should include two sets of short codes (preferably the owner's code or the CD number of the equipment, and a parts ID). The identification number, taken in its entirety, should be unique to the equipment owner. - Acceptable means of identifying tower, boom or jib parts:
Crane / derrick sections may be identified by stampings on a supported end of the main chords or a cross members with a tool and die set; by engraving; by indenting with a cold point chisel; or by stamped metal tags permanently affixed to the section. Other forms of identification may be acceptable if they are permanent or semi-permanent in nature; has good abrasion and chemical resistance; cannot be easily altered; and is highly visible. Each line of the identification markings shall be no shorter than two (2) inches, nor more than twelve (12) inches in length, and shall be located and orientated in such a way that will remain visible when the sections are installed in a normal manner. Where possible, multiple markings at varies locations on a section is encouraged. In addition, the equipment, process or workmanship used in marking the ID shall not in any way cause damage or have adverse effects on the structural section. The use of excessive force or rapid heating and cooling is prohibited. - Enforcement:
Magnetic Particle Inspection Report or other nondestructive test report on crane structural sections submitted to Cranes and Derricks must comply with Specifics (1) or the report will not be accepted. Hoist and Rigging Inspectors are required to check the section identification and ensure that the section has a valid magnetic particle inspection (or other nondestructive testing) report during on-site and annual inspection visits. Structural sections not identified or improperly identified will be rejected. The above identifying process will not prohibit the use of interchangeable sections or parts, provided that all parts involved passed the proper nondestructive test and the reports are submitted to the Cranes and Derricks Division or available on site for inspection. |
