The Scaffold Safety Team (SST) came into existence as a result of one of the 13 Scaffold Task Force recommendations. SST is an inspection team dedicated to conducting proactive inspections on sidewalk sheds, suspended and supported scaffolds. This team focuses on workers, foreman, riggers, contractors and owners who do not engage in safe work practices. The Team audits suspended scaffold notifications, proactively inspects sidewalk shed and supported scaffold permits to ensure all is erected according to plan safely and within regulation. In addition, the Scaffold Safety Team responds to scaffold/shed incidents as well as complaints throughout the five boroughs. The enforcement tools used by SST include Stop Work Orders, Environmental Control Board Violations, Department of Buildings Violations and Criminal Court Summonses, which are usually issued to the rigger, contractor or owner.
