Information for Residents' Families

In the event that your child is in the care of the NYC Department of Juvenile Justice, you may visit your child and he/she may initiate telephone contact with you. In order to facilitate your contact with your child, you will need to provide various documents to establish your identity with a photograph including your age and address. You may also need to establish your identity so that the Department releases your child to your care if he or she is admitted at night, or during a weekend or holiday by the police, and the youth is eligible for release. The following forms of identification are acceptable to establish the relationship between you and your child including for visiting:

. Country Passport (Foreign or Domestic)
. Birth Certificate (Foreign or Domestic)
. Foreign Country Identification
. Any type of utility bills including gas, electricity, telephone or cell phone
. Public Assistance Card
. College ID
. Employment ID
. US Passport
. Voter Registration Card
. Permanent Residence Card
. Federal, New York State or New York City Government ID
. US Military ID
. NYS Driver’s License
. NYS Non-Driver’s Identification

DJJ operates consistent with Mayor Bloomberg’s Executive Order # 41 titled “City-wide Privacy Policy and Amendment of Executive Order No. 34 Relating to City Policy Concerning Immigrant Access to City Services” and DJJ’s Policy & Procedure # 05/07 titled “Confidential Nature of Resident’s Information Including Immigration Status”.
