I welcome you to the home page of the Department of Juvenile Justice. The core mission of the Department is to provide temporary care and custody to youth that are accused of committing delinquent or criminal acts in the City of New York. The Department serves a dual role to promote public safety and to care for the young people remanded to its care by the City's Judiciary.
To that end, the Department's dedicated staff work 24-hours a day/7 days a week to provide detained youth vital services including health and mental health, case management, education, discharge planning, religion and recreation.
The Department relies on a system of three secure detention facilities and a network of 16 group homes to keep youth as close to home as possible during the pendency of their court cases.
I invite you to view our website to learn more about the Department's commitment to the young people we are responsible for. If you are a parent or guardian of a youth in detention, and you are interested in learning about visiting hours, kindly go to http://www.nyc.gov/html/djj/html/visiting.html or call 311.
Sincerely,

Neil Hernandez
Commissioner
