February 16, 2012- Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced that the City is launching four new central digital media channels for City information as part of Social Media Week. The NYCGov social media channels will allow the City to effectively engage with residents by providing instant access to relevant and useful information about life in the City.

Homegrown New York Technology Company Expands Office; Still Hiring With 50 Open Positions
January 10, 2012- Mayor Bloomberg today joined Seamless, the nation’s leading digital service for ordering delivery and takeout food from thousands of top restaurants, to announce the opening of its New York City headquarters. The 28,000-square-foot office, located at 1065 Avenue of the Americas at 40th Street overlooking Bryant Park, is home to more than 140 of the company’s 240 total employees including the executive team, engineers, the marketing team, customer support and sales.



NYC WINS CITY OF THE YEAR AND BEST USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN 2011 GOVFRESH AWARDS
December 22, 2011- The City of New York took the top prize in the 2011 GovFresh Awards, winning City of the Year in addition to Best Use of Social Media. The GovFresh Awards honor tech innovations within city governments that foster communication and collaboration between citizens and municipalities. GovFresh founder Luke Fretwell cited the City’s comprehensive approach to citizen engagement and technology implementation as reasons for its success.



FACEBOOK TO OPEN ENGINEERING OFFICE IN NEW YORK CITY IN 2012
December 2, 2011- To keep up with its rapid growth, Facebook today announced plans to establish an engineering presence in New York City and tap into the remarkable technical talent that the region has to offer. The Facebook NYC engineering office, the company's first outside the West Coast, will open in early 2012 and will begin accepting applications immediately.

October 26, 2011- Mayor Bloomberg today joined online review company Yelp to announce the opening of their new office in New York City. The new Yelp East Coast headquarters, located at 104 Fifth Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets, is already home to over 65 full-time employees – 20 of whom joined Yelp just this past month – and includes local and brand sales executives and a marketing team.

October 11, 2011- Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Robert K. Steel, and Deputy Mayor for Operations Cas Holloway today launched NYC BigApps 3.0, the third annual contest for software developers and members of the public to create web or mobile applications using official City data. Originally launched in 2009, the BigApps competitions aim to improve government transparency, as well as improve the daily lives of New York City residents and visitors.

City’s Tech Sector Continues to Grow and Create Jobs, As High-Tech Employment and Establishments In the City Have Increased by More than 30 Percent Since 2005 City Twitter Accounts Have 300,000 Followers
October 6, 2011- Mayor Bloomberg today joined Twitter to announce the opening of the first-ever New York City Twitter office. Located at 340 Madison Avenue, the office will serve as the official East Coast headquarters for the company and will be home to 40 full-time employees, including engineers, designers and advertising executives, with plans to expand in the coming months. Twitter works with countless media companies in New York City and a growing number of start-ups that create useful business tools based on the Twitter platform and Twitter-related idea. The City of New York and @NYCMayorsOffice use Twitter to communicate with citizens, and City Twitter accounts have an aggregate following of more than 300,000.

September 28, 2011- Engagement is one of the four core tenets of New York City's Road Map for the Digital City. As part of NYC Digital mission's to empower agencies to leverage social media to the fullest, and in partnership with the Mayor’s Office communications team, on September 27, 2011 NYC Digital hosted Engage NYC, our first annual social media summit. Held at the Paley Center for Media, over 100 people from across city government participated in the event, which featured presentations and strategic training on how to effectively use social media platforms to engage, inform and serve New Yorkers.

Winning Teams Meet with Mayor; Prototypes Will Guide Redesign of NYC.GOV
July 31, 2011- On July 30 and July 31, 2011, the City of New York in partnership with General Assembly hosted its first hackathon, titled Reinvent NYC.Gov, welcoming over 100 participants to collaboratively build prototypes that will guide the future development of NYC.gov, the public’s primary digital gateway to City government. Equipped with support from leading technology APIs and access to City data platforms, participants generated 14 proposals for the upcoming redesign of NYC.gov and a panel of judges from the public and private sectors selected five winners based on innovation, usability, social integration, location technology and ingenuity.

July 7, 2011- Deputy Mayor for Operations Stephen Goldsmith today launched Change by Us NYC, a new website that enables New Yorkers to connect with City government and each other online, share their ideas, and create project teams for improving the City. Created by New York-based design firm Local Projects and administered by the Mayor's Office with support from non-profit partners, Change by Us NYC (nyc.changeby.us) is initially focused on ways to make the City more environmentally sustainable.

AT&T Will Install and Maintain Free Wi-Fi Service in Parks in All Five Boroughs This Summer at No Cost to Taxpayers
June 9, 2011- Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson today announced a five-year initiative to provide free Wi-Fi service at 26 locations in 20 New York City parks across the five boroughs. Starting today, AT&T Wi-Fi is available free of charge to park-goers at Battery Bosque in Battery Park, the north-end playground in Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx, and around the recreation center at Thomas Jefferson Park in East Harlem, with 23 additional park locations to follow throughout the summer.

January 24, 2011-The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) Commissioner Katherine Oliver announced the hiring of Rachel Sterne as the City's first Chief Digital Officer, a role established by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Commissioner Oliver with the goal of improving communication with residents and businesses by enhancing government transparency and working closely with digital media.
