CITY OF NEW YORK LAUNCHES SECOND ANNUAL #LOVENYC INSTAGRAM PHOTO CONTEST

Competition Invites New Yorkers to Submit Photos via Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, Showcasing What They Love Most about NYC’s Five Boroughs

August 5, 2013- The City of New York is excited to announce the second annual #LoveNYC Instagram Photo Contest, a social media competition that invites locals to submit photos of what they love about New York City and compete for the opportunity to serve as the Instagram Ambassadors for the City’s official Instagram (www.instagram.com/nycgov). Winning photos representing each borough will be displayed in a digital exhibition at The New York Public Library in late September 2013. All voting will take place on Facebook.

Last year’s successful contest garnered more than 2,000 photo submissions. This year, for the first time, New Yorkers can enter the contest and share their favorite images of the City via Instagram and Facebook, as well as Twitter. The panel of judges will narrow down the submissions to the top four photos featuring each borough. The public will then vote on Facebook for their favorite, choosing one Photo Ambassador to represent each borough on Instagram. Photos taken by the ambassadors will be featured on the City’s social media channels throughout the summer, highlighting New York City through the eyes of New Yorkers.

The #LoveNYC 2013 judges include: Carter Cleveland, Founder, Artsy; Liz Eswein, Co-founder, The Mobile Media Lab, and @NewYorkCity on Instagram; Billy Parrott, Managing Librarian, Mid-Manhattan Art and Picture Collection, The New York Public Library; Brandon Stanton, Founder and Photographer of Humans of New York; and Howard Wolfson, Deputy Mayor for Government Affairs and Communications, City of New York.

“More New Yorkers than ever are using Instagram and other photo apps to capture what they love about New York City,” said Rachel Haot, Chief Digital Officer. “With engagement as a key element of Mayor Bloomberg’s Digital Roadmap, by embracing one of NYC’s fastest growing platforms, we are taking an exciting step in our user-centric strategy. Through crowdsourcing the City’s official Instagram feed, we’re thrilled to empower talented New Yorkers to share their creative vision with the City and the world.”

“The New York Public Library’s Picture Collection at Mid-Manhattan Library holds millions of items that have inspired New York City’s large community of artists and students for nearly a century,” said Billy Parrott, NYPL Managing Librarian of the Picture Collection at Mid-Manhattan Library. “I am looking forward to participating in this year’s #LoveNYC Photo Contest and the opportunity to rediscover our iconic city through the photographs of my fellow New Yorkers.”

“We are thrilled to see Instagram take on such a prominent role in the #LoveNYC contest,” said Libby Leffler, Strategic Partner Manager, Facebook. “Instagram is all about capturing and sharing life’s moments with authentic and engaging content. The #LoveNYC contest is an ideal opportunity for passionate New Yorkers to showcase pride for their borough on Instagram and then vote for their favorite photo on Facebook.”

“I’m honored to judge the City’s second #LoveNYC photo contest,” said Carter Cleveland, Founder and CEO of Artsy. “NYC is the global capital for creativity and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a population more in love with their hometown than in New York. The #LoveNYC photo contest brings New Yorker’s love and creative expression together. As someone involved in the arts/tech scene of NYC, I couldn’t be more excited to see what creative output this amazing City inspires in its citizens.”

“I know from experience how unique New Yorkers are, and I’m looking forward to see how they’ll share their different views and perspectives of the City,” said Brandon Stanton, founder and photographer of Humans of New York. “This contest will be a fun and innovative way to see how New Yorkers choose to express themselves.”

“I’m very excited and honored to be one of the judges for the #LoveNYC photo contest,” Liz Eswein, Co-founder, The Mobile Media Lab, and @NewYorkCity on Instagram. “New York City is truly one of a kind. The people, the food, the architecture, the museums, the culture and energy: there’s truly no place like it. I can’t wait to see how photographers capture this amazing city!”
