On Tuesday, November 22- continuing its annual Thanksgiving tradition- the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum hosted approximately 150 clients from City shelters for a night of education and entertainment. Accompanied by Commissioner Diamond, attendees received personal tours of the vessel, and an up close look at one of the most famous aircraft carriers of all times.
"We are so thankful to the Intrepid for its generosity- not just around the holidays, but all year long," said Commissioner Diamond. "This is one of the best examples of how DHS works hand-in-hand with sponsors to provide families and individuals in shelter with unique experiences that are both fun and educational."
Since forging a partnership with DHS in 2003, the museum has welcomed more than 2,000 children and adults from City shelters onto its decks over the years, always proving to be a memorable occasion. Such events are coordinated through DHS' Office of Communications & External Affairs, as the unit strives to connect clients in shelter to an array of activities in New York City.
On Tuesday, approximately 30 members of the Intrepid's staff stayed past closing hours to volunteer for the event. After viewing a movie in the vessel's auditorium, guests also enjoyed a customary Thanksgiving feast in the mess hall-turned-Great Room, where thousands of sailors once at their meals.
Opening its doors to the public in 1982, the Intrepid has become of one America's leading historic, cultural and educational institutions.
