Celebrating the Holidays at the Radisson Martinique

In 1898, surrounded by the champagne sparkle of Broadway, the Hotel Martinique opened its doors to visitors from across the globe.

Now recognized as the City's oldest operating hotel, the Beaux Arts building has been witness to an array of stories behind its walls- some depicting the wonder and amazement of well-traveled guests, and others more sadly portraying the struggles of families who stayed there during its stint as a welfare hotel.

However, returning full-circle to its luxurious roots- today, the Radisson Martinique embodies the spirit of old New York charm, while giving back to those in need throughout the five boroughs. On Saturday, December 3, the artfully restored, French Renaissance hotel welcomed families from six City shelters to experience a day of holiday entertainment and cuisine.

"They're treating us like royalty," one mother said. "I know I've put on a few pounds just looking at all the delicious food, but it's certainly worth it to enjoy such a wonderful day."

Located on 32nd Street and Broadway, the hotel was granted landmark status in 1998, nearly a decade after its use as a welfare hotel had ended. Remembered as some of the building's darkest days, the era remains a stark reminder of the homeless services system of yesteryear- one that has been vastly transformed into an efficient and respectful network of assistance.

Since partnering with the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) on a toy drive in 2010, the Martinique aimed to expand its charitable efforts this holiday season. Working with the agency's Office of Communications & External Affairs, the hotel hosted 160 children and adults for an afternoon of food, dancing and- of course- Santa Claus.

Thanks to the generosity of Radisson Martinique staff, including Vice President and General Manager Susan Anselona, each family also received personalized gifts- a surprise that made the children's faces light up with excitement.

Nestled in midtown- just steps away from the Empire State Building and several of New York's signature attractions- the Martinique has long brought the splendor of the City to its guests. Yet, perhaps even more impressive is the hotel's dedication to another of the Big Apple's venerable traditions: its outstanding record of serving those most in need.
