Knicks City Dancers Teach Children in Shelter Their
Dance
The Knicks City
Dancers dance in front of 18,000 basketball fans at one of the world's most
famous sports arenas, Madison Square Garden. But on May 3, three members
of the Knicks’ official dance team performed for one of their most energetic and
engaging audiences - children at the LIFE Center, a family shelter in
Manhattan. The dancers led a clinic for the kids, including teaching them
one of the routines they perform during Knicks games, and talking to them about
the value of exercise and the importance of good nutrition. The children
were very enthusiastic, asking the dancers many questions about what they
do. All of the children received handouts on exercise and nutrition, New
York Knicks t-shirts, gift bags and autographed pictures of the dancers.
Commissioner Hess attended the clinic as
well, and was pleased to see the children having such a good time while they
received important lessons on healthy life style. "This is a wonderful
example of how DHS works with sponsors such as the Garden of Dreams to improve
the quality of life for children residing in temporary housing," Commissioner
Hess said.
For the past year and a half, the Garden of
Dreams Foundation, the charity foundation of Madison Square Garden, has teamed
up with DHS’ Office of Special Events and the LIFE Center to organize
recreational and educational projects for families from the LIFE Center and
other family shelters.
