Every year, amid the hustle and bustle of the holiday shopping rush, the magic of the North Pole comes to Macy's Herald Square. Building on this joyous tradition, on Tuesday, November 29, Macy's marked the 61st anniversary of Operation Happy Children– an effort that has long brought the excitement of Santaland to underprivileged children throughout the five boroughs.
Working with the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) to coordinate the attendance of 600 children– including several hundred youngsters from City shelters– the legendary department store annually treats its guests to breakfast, entertainment and gifts.
DHS Commissioner Seth Diamond joined Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott and New York Giants wide receiver Ramses Barden at the event. The trio accompanied children through Santaland- a fantasy trail of snow-capped mountains, candy canes and toys that leads to the infamous workshop of Santa Claus himself.
"Every child deserves to celebrate the holidays and be able to create happy, long-lasting memories," said Commissioner Diamond. "We thank Macy's for its ongoing generosity and for helping to brighten the lives of families in shelter."
Mrs. Claus and the Energizer Bunny were also on-hand for the festivities, while a clown and magician made their rounds as the children ate. Then, escorted by elves on an imaginary train ride, the pre-schoolers took the elusive journey through a sea of twinkling lights and holiday cheer to meet Santa.
"Operation Happy Children remains a wonderful holiday tradition for our agency," said DHS' Director of Special Events Antonio Rodriguez. "There is nothing better than being here with the kids for this special occasion, and seeing the looks of total wonder and amazement on their faces."
