Playing Ball at Citi Field

On Monday, September 12, Department of Homeless Services (DHS) Commissioner Seth Diamond accompanied approximately 60 children from shelter to the Mets versus Nationals game at Citi Field. Coordinated by DHS’ Office of Communications & External Affairs, the event was just one of many special activities offered to families throughout the year, thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors and nonprofit organizations.

From their seats in right field, the children had a bird’s eye view of the ballpark, which was opened in 2009 to replace the iconic Shea Stadium. They also received visits from Councilmember Julissa Ferreras, who was present to promote an anti-bullying campaign in conjunction with the major league team, and from Mr. Met, the club's infamous mascot.

“Going to baseball games as a kid was one of my favorite pastimes,” said Commissioner Diamond. “I’m so glad I could share an evening of fun with some of our outstanding children, and help them create a memory that will last for years to come.”

Several other agency employees, who participate in DHS’ Volunteer Corps, also came to the ballpark to spend time with the youngsters and serve as chaperones. Through the Volunteer Corps, staff members who normally work out of the agency’s headquarters are able to interact with clients and receive a different perspective on the department's mission.

Although ultimately, the Nationals came out on top with a score of 3-2, the children viewed the evening as nothing short of a homerun. Thank you to the New York Mets Office of Community Relations for hosting a memorable event- one that will certainly go down in the record books as a 'win' for the kids who attended.
