DHS Partners with Lend Lease in Community Volunteer Effort

On Thursday, September 18, Department of Homeless Services (DHS) Commissioner Michele Ovesey participated in Community Day- a global volunteer effort sponsored by integrated property and infrastructure provider, Lend Lease.

Held in Manhattan's East Village, the undertaking aimed to benefit the Sirovich Center- a comprehensive community program operated by the New York City Department for the Aging (DFTA) and non-profit provider, the Educational Alliance? as well as DHS' East 12th Street Senior Residence- a supportive housing facility run by non-profit provider Volunteers of America (VOA) that currently serves 90 formerly homeless seniors. The co-located programs at the site exemplify interagency collaboration and partnerships with the non-profit sector.

Marking the 18th annual celebration of Community Day, the 2013 celebration involved more than 6,100 Lend Lease employees volunteering in over 330 community-based projects worldwide. Founded in 1996, Community Day has enabled employees to give back to their communities and contribute more than 500,000 hours to addressing a variety of social, economic and environmental issues.

Each year, the event allows the City to come together with Lend Lease and complete a variety of home improvement and renovation projects. Commissioner Ovesey helped to pot plants at the Senior Center, joining other volunteers in a range of beautification endeavors.

"DHS always strives to be a good neighbor, and part of that objective is giving back to communities throughout the five boroughs whenever possible," Commissioner Ovesey said. "I was honored to be a part of this tremendous initiative, and work alongside other volunteers who wish to make a positive impact on our City. We want to sincerely thank Lend Lease for organizing this annual, world-wide effort."

As a leading group in its field, Lend Lease has approximately 19,000 employees worldwide and is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. The firm's capabilities span the property and infrastructure spectrum.
