Senior Employment Services

The Department for the Aging's Senior Employment Services (SES) assists New York City residents 55 years of age and older who are seeking work opportunities. SES workshops offer classroom training, job search techniques and part-and full-time job placements. All SES programs offer employment contact and placement assistance for low to moderate income mature adults.

Training Programs and Services

SCSEP(Title V) Age Works Computer Training Center

Beginners and Intermediate Computer Skills

The Age Works Computer Training Center provides basic and intermediate instruction in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint). This training is ideal for beginners and a refresher for those with some knowledge of this software programs. It is aimed at workers with office skills who need to learn computers for the first time and for those who have fallen behind and need to upgrade their skills for today's technological workforce. The length of the courses is 8-10 weeks and prepares trainees:

  • For employment in data entry, word processing and general automated office work.
  • With an understanding of the fundamentals of the Internet.
  • For employer-employee relations, customer service skills, job search techniques and resume writing.

To qualify for this program all applicants must be age 55 or older, type 25 or more words a minute (tested on a computer keyboard), have a 9th grade reading and math skills (tested), and be interested in returning to the workforce full- or part-time.

The SCSEP (Title V) Food Emporium and Riese Restaurant Training Center Offers Customer Service Skills/Online Service/Computer Skills

The Center prepares trainees for jobs in various industries including retail, sales and other customer service fields. Using the computer-based Interactive Learning System, trainees develop the necessary skills and confidence to perform a job in a professional and friendly manner. The program offers the chance to learn and apply the basics of soft computer skills to multiple business operations. Graduates will be able to apply the skills learned to various industries.

The program length is 8-10 weeks. Upon completion of the course trained graduate will be skilled in:

  • 300 hours of hands-on training using the computer-based Interactive Learning System, including online customer service skills.
  • Have specialized customer service etiquette and skills to meet the needs industry requires excellent service skills etiquette which is very important in the workplace. Business requires strong refinement in customer service skills. Online service skills enable trainees to professionally manage customer requests online.
  • Will prepare trainees to work in banking, finance and other service industries. Trainees will also master the operation of electronic office equipment. Strong customer service is emphasized to assist on line customer service.
  • Trainees will also participate in job readiness workshops.

Trainees will be skilled in:

  • Customer service relations
  • Computer skills
  • The operations of electronic office equipment including electronic cash registers, fax machines, photo copying equipment and data processing.
  • Employer-employee relations, job search and resume writing

To qualify for this program all applicants must be age 55 or older, have a 7th grade reading and math skills (tested) and must be interested in returning to the workforce full- or part-time.

The Senior Community Service Employment Program

Host Agencies Work Site Training

The SCSEP (Title V) program for mature adults offers temporary part-time training opportunities in such settings as non-profit businesses or government agencies. We currently have more than 600 trainees in 300 worksites throughout the city. While receiving on site training, each person receives a full range of job search techniques, employment contact and placement assistance to enable them to find permanent employment.

The Job Preparation Workshops

Prepares applicants with the necessary skills for effective resume writing and the techniques for successful job interviews to be competitive in today's labor market. These workshops are designed for the mature adult with proven work experience and the motivation to secure permanent employment as quickly as possible. Workshops have been incorporated during in the length of the program.

Career Counseling is available to all trainees enrolled in the program.
