Transportation Services

If you cannot utilize public transportation, you may be able to receive car and/or taxi service for medical and other essential visits. This service is available through community-based transportation programs funded by the Department for the Aging. In addition, many senior centers provide bus transportation to and from their sites. Senior centers also sponsor shopping and recreational bus trips and cultural outings. Riders are requested to make a contribution.

MTA New York Transit operates Access-A-Ride, the City's paratransit system. Access-A-Ride provides transportation for people with disabilities who are unable to use public bus or subway service for some or all of their trip. It offers shared ride, door-to-door service. Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays.

If you are 65 years or older, you are eligible to apply for a Reduced Fare MetroCard. With a Reduced Fare MetroCard you pay half the current fare on New York City Transit subways and local buses.

The MTA Reduced Fare MetroCard is personalized with YOUR NAME and photograph and works the same as a regular MetroCard. You can buy unlimited rides or you can pay-per-ride.

Reduced Fare can be used on:

• MTA New York City Transit subways and local buses (MTA express buses offer reduced fare during non-rush hours only)
• MTA Long Island buses
• MTA Long Island Rail Road and MTA Metro-North Railroad (any time except weekday rush hours) to New York City terminals
