What Happens After I Apply?
After receiving your application, SCRIE will send you an acknowledgment letter assigning you a docket number. This docket number is important. It is used to identify your personal SCRIE record. Have it handy whenever you call the Information and Referral Helpline.
Your landlord also will receive a notice informing him or her that you have applied for SCRIE. The landlord is asked to complete a form that provides the SCRIE processing unit with specific information about your building.
You do not need your landlord's permission to participate in SCRIE. Your eligibility is based upon your application and supporting documents.
Your application will go through several levels of review. This is to ensure that you have provided all the information required to determine if you are eligible, as well as the proper amount of your exemption.
If any information is missing from your application, SCRIE will send you a notice requesting the documentation you must provide. This, of course, delays the process. Applications that are complete, with all support documentation, will be processed promptly. Then SCRIE can calculate an appropriate exemption and prepare a corresponding tax abatement for your landlord.
DFTA will notify you when the processing of your application is complete. However, if you wish to check the status of your application, you may call 311 or search the Department's Online Services. In both instances, you simply enter your docket number and you'll receive an instant update.
