Pilot Program Takes Aim at Elderly Poverty

The Integrated Benefits Pilot Program, a broad-based effort to enroll low-income seniors in safety net benefit and entitlement programs, has launched at 14 senior centers in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx. The seven-month initiative aims to improve seniors’ participation in more than 40 programs that help keep older persons out of poverty.

DFTA Joins FLONYC to Spotlight Geriatric Mental Health

Chirlane McCray, First Lady of New York City and Donna Corrado, Ph.D., Commissioner of the City’s Department for the Aging, paid a visit to Service Program for Older People (SPOP) on March 3 to engage in a wide-ranging conversation about the mental health concerns of older adults. The visit helped launch the First Lady’s campaign to promote public conversation about mental illness and develop new strategies to make treatment systems more inclusive and responsive.

Let’s Meet: DFTA Volunteer Resource Center and You

Volunteers who are seeking ways to help seniors engage with their community, brush up on skills and meet new people can now turn to the Department for the Aging to offer their talents and services. The call is out for volunteers to sign up with DFTA’s new Volunteer Resource Center (VRC).

Morris Innovative Center Showcases its Health and Wellness Program

Through presentations and roundtable discussion, staff of Bronxworks’ Morris Innovative Senior Center (ISC) shared their expertise at health and wellness programming with seven neighborhood center directors the morning of March 18. Participants learned how the ISC’s Wellness Coordinator, Nutrition Coordinator and senior volunteers are changing center members’ eating habits and turning them into passionate devotees of physical exercise.
