Senior Artists Respond to "Sandy"

One year to the day after Hurricane Sandy swept through Coney Island, members of two Coney Island senior centers gathered on the boardwalk in front of the old Childs Restaurant to present a gift to their ocean community. Local artist Jennifer Wade worked with seniors from the JASA Senior Alliance Senior Center and the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island Seaside Innovative Senior Center (formerly Surf Solomon) to create four panels of ceramic tiles depicting Coney Island scenes and oceanic images for installation on the boardwalk.

Dancing for Wellness and Community

"You have fabulous dancers here at Leonard Covello!" Naomi Goldberg Hass, creator of Dances for a Variable Population recently told the enthusiastic audience gathered in the Manhattan senior center's cafeteria. Haas and her troupe of dancers were presenting "Dances for Seniors," a free performance/interactive workshop especially structured for the elderly. "We're here to show you that movement is accessible to everyone!"

"I don't play to lose. Of course I want to win," said Charles Cole, a member of The SAGE Senior Center in Manhattan, shortly before joining his team to compete against a team from Queens' Benjamin Rosenthal Senior Center in the very first virtual bowling match between the two centers.

So begins a poem by Irwin Goldman published online in The New Sun. Goldman is one of nine older men and women who call themselves the Hamilton Poets (aka Full Bloom Poets) because they attend Project Find Hamilton Senior Center's Poetry Workshop in Manhattan for two hours every week.

Working Out/Feeling Good at Bronxworks' Morris Innovative Senior Center

"Seeing a long time gym member from Morris is like seeing an energetic teenager with no limitations!" says Lory Beaudoin, full-time health coordinator and fitness specialist at Bronxworks' Morris Innovative Senior Center in the Bronx since April of 2011. "Our gym has made such a difference. We used to have seniors who just sat around. Now, they wouldn't miss a day of fitness!"

A Neighborhood Life: Tessie Kozicke Gives Back

As she sat monitoring lunch contributions at the Whitaker Neighborhood Senior Center on the lower East Side one morning in late October, 94-year old Tessie De Rosa (nee Kozicke) personally greeted each member as they signed in. She has known most of them for years. Like her, many had grown up in the neighborhood where Whitaker is located and never moved away. To them, she is Tessie Kozicke, her maiden name.
