Hunting on Water Supply Lands
Hunting on Water Supply lands begins each fall on September 1, the first day of squirrel hunting season, and ends at the close of spring turkey season on May 31. All applicable New York State hunting regulations and laws are in effect on Water Supply hunting areas, including weapons restrictions, species restrictions and hunting seasons for the allowed game. Designated hunting areas are available for bow, shotgun, rifle, and handgun and muzzleloader hunting where permitted by New York State regulations. Other restrictions may exist on Water Supply hunting areas. Hunters are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the List of Recreation Areas which may include special hunting conditions, recreation area maps, and call the local DEP office for the area of interest to obtain more information.. See the List of Recreation Areas and Use Designations for areas available for hunting.
Any additions or changes to this list, as well as maps of individual hunting areas, will be posted here. Further information on hunting areas can be obtained by calling the DEP Land Management Office nearest the hunting area of interest. Hunters are responsible for keeping themselves informed of hunting area status. To obtain Individual Recreation Area maps, please click here. You must have a valid DEP Access Permit in order to view and download these maps. (link will appear in a new browser window)
To create bigger bucks, better herds and healthier forests, some QDM measures to promote the harvest of does and restrict the harvest of immature bucks are in effect on four hunting areas in the towns of Kent and Putnam Valley in Putnam County. These are:
On these hunting areas the following conditions apply to all hunters over 17 years of age and will be enforced:
This project is in partnership with the Kent Rod and Gun Club and with the support of the Putnam County Sportsmen’s Federation and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The members of the Kent Rod and Gun Club also unanimously decided to practice QDM on their own lands. DEP will monitor how this program affects forest health and the local deer population and forest health with the assistance of the Club. Help create a future of bigger bucks, healthy deer, and vigorous forests by following these conditions in the QDM areas this year and encouraging other hunters to do the same!
Hunters who completed and returned a 2006 Deer Hunt Survey for last year, have a valid DEP 2007-2008 Hunt Tag, and plan to hunt in any of these areas were qualified to apply for a DMAP doe permit. Hunter who have successfully hunted deer on Water Supply hunting areas, and successfully filled DMAP tags in the past are especially encouraged to apply. Hunters interested in receiving a DMAP tag should e-mail or call the Access Permit office to be added to the DMAP Hunter list. Further information on DMAP, including the list of DMAP tag recipients, will be posted here prior to deer season. DEP Hunting Tag holders who would like to participate in similar special hunting opportunities in future seasons should be sure to complete and submit this year’s hunt survey, by the due date.
Instructions on measuring antler beam and preparing jaw bones for submission: Jawbones and antler information can be left in the labeled drop-boxes at the DEP Offices in Ashokan, Downsville, Gilboa, Grahamsville, Carmel, and Kingston. You can also mail them to NYCDEP Deer Biology, 71 Smith Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401. Jawbones must be cleaned and double-bagged in waterproof plastic bags, and those sent through the mail must be labeled “Biohazard” and comply with Postal Service regulations. Be sure to include your name, Access Permit number and the name of the DEP hunting area where you harvested the deer. Get your packet in to DEP by February 1, to be eligible for the gift drawing. Once sufficient data is colleted, results of the study will be printed in Watershed Recreation, the Guide to Hunting, or on the DEP website, so stay tuned.
NOTE: Hunters who submitted hunting surveys for the previous season by the due date of January 22, will automatically receive 2008-2009 Hunting Tags, provided their Access Permits remain valid. 2008-2009 Hunting Guides containing 2008-2009 Hunting Tags will be mailed to these hunters in late summer. The following list includes the Access Permit numbers and birthdates of hunters who completed and returned a 2006-2007 survey by the due date, and do not need to apply for a 2007-2008 Hunting Tag: See the List of Recreation Areas and Use Designations for areas available for hunting.
