New Creek

This watershed is about 2,200 acres in size. The four neighborhoods of Midland Beach, Dongan Hills, Grant City, and Todt Hill fall within the New Creek watershed either in whole or in part. At the lower elevations, the Midland Beach neighborhood contains the New Creek channel surrounded by large areas of marshland, dominated by common reed plants called phragmites. Those vast marshlands were a tidal wetland system of spartina grass prior to the construction of Father Capodanno Boulevard, which obstructed tidal flow inland into this large flat area.
