Students
from New York City, Westchester and Putnam to Release Trout
They Have Raised In Their Classrooms
“Trout
in the Classroom” raised from eggs to get a fond farewell
in Cross River
Dates: |
May 15 – May 19 |
Location: |
Ward Pound Ridge Reservation
Pound Ridge, Westchester |
Directions: |
Take I-684 to Exit 6, then Route 35 East for about
4 miles to Route 121 South. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation
is on the left. Go to Kimberly Bridge Picnic Area. |
Students from throughout the region will release
brook and brown trout that they have raised in their classrooms
as part of the “Trout in the Classroom” educational
program by Trout Unlimited, the New York City Department of Environmental
Protection, Headwaters Initiative, Theodore Gordon Flyfishers and
Westchester County Parks.
Teachers who participate in this program receive
trout eggs in the fall. Their students raise and care for
the trout all school year and then in the spring travel to streams
to release the small trout fingerlings. In an age where children
are losing contact with the natural environment, “Trout in
the Classroom” brings the natural world directly into classrooms.
Beyond an academic understanding, students grow to
love and care for their trout. As the program progresses,
students learn to see connections between trout, water resources,
the environment and themselves. During the release of the
trout, students assess the stream health by measuring various factors,
such as temperature, turbidity, pH and the macroinvertebrate populations. They
also study the nearby forest habitat.
Students will be arriving all week at the Ward Pound
Ridge Reservation from throughout New York City, Westchester and
Putnam to release trout into the Cross River. A schedule
for the week follows on the next page.
