Workshops
to Help Restore Idlewild Park Wetlands
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
will participate in two one-day environmental workshops to help
restore the Idlewild Park Wetlands in Southeast Queens, near JFK
Airport. In celebration of Earth Day, the Eastern Queens Alliance
(EQA), a federation of civic associations, is sponsoring the workshop.
Their purpose is to raise community awareness about the value of
wetlands, estuaries and the freshwater and salt marshes in Idlewild
Park.

All members of the community are welcome to select either
day’s presentation. . In addition, on Friday, April
22 nd, 45 fourth grade students from P.S. 181 will participate
in the workshop for a hands-on opportunity to plant freshwater
wetland plugs, trees and shrubs as they receive valuable
information about protecting their natural environment. |

Participants will meet at Springfield
Park House in Springfield Park for a presentation by workshop
leaders from Department of Parks’ Natural Resources
Group (NRG)and DEP’s Office of Environmental
Planning and Assessment about wetlands in general and more
specifically, Idlewild Park before moving on to Idlewild
Park. . They will learn about invasive species, their impact
and the removal process, about the wide variety of wetland
plants and the planting process. After a short lunch, provided
by the Eastern Queens Alliance, participants will go to Idlewild
Park (approximately at noon) to plant emergent wetland plants
and shrubs around the freshwater wetland area near 225 th
Street south of 149 th Avenue. |
The workshop is funded by a 5Star grant from the National Fish
and Wildlife. In addition to the NYC Department of Parks and DEP,
others working with the Idlewild Park Preservation Committee are
NYC Partnership for Parks, the Green Apple Corps, and the National
Park Service, Rivers, Trails Conservation Assistance Program.
