The newly renovated Living Harbor Wet Lab will open
on the Peking , an early 20 th century sailing vessel
that is part of the South Street Seaport Museum . The Wet Lab is
a collaborative effort with the New York City Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP) and will serve as a hands-on classroom where students
can learn about New York Harbor and the environment.
Students from P.S. 116 in Manhattan will begin the
day by taking part in an education program on water testing, aquatic
organisms and various nautical activities. In the new Lab they
will have the opportunity to handle different sea creatures; on
the deck they will learn how a large sailing vessel operates; and
on the pier they will learn how to test and protect harbor water
quality. The Lab will be officially opened with a ribbon-cutting
ceremony at 11:30 AM .
Also docked at the pier to help the students celebrate
the opening of the Wet Lab will be the Osprey, one of
DEP’s water quality monitoring vessels, which has an onboard
lab for water quality testing. Refreshments will be served.
