New
York City Department of Environmental Protection Celebrates Water Week
May 5 - May 12, 2001
The quality of the water we drink and in the waterways surrounding New York
City is of vital importance for all New Yorkers. That is why the City's Department
of Environmental Protection (DEP) is joining water suppliers and wastewater
treatment operators across the country in celebrating Water Week, May 5 through
May 12. DEP will sponsor events and exhibits throughout the week (see attached
schedule of events) to highlight the importance of the Agency's work to improve
the quality of the City's drinking water, wastewater treatment, and the water
quality in our rivers, Harbor and estuaries.
DEP Commissioner Joel A. Miele Sr., P.E. said, "On behalf of Mayor
Giuliani and all of us at DEP, I am pleased to invite the public to view the
improved environment of New York Harbor as well as the advanced technology
at our water pollution control plants. Our celebration provides people with
opportunities to learn about the water supply system and DEP's efforts to
protect it, the wastewater treatment process, and the importance of healthy
waterways."
Here are some of the highlights planned for the week:
-
Celebrate Decades of Clean Water at DEP's 14 Wastewater Pollution
Control Plants, May 7 - May 13. Each of New York City's water pollution
control plants has helped the City achieve waterways that are cleaner today
than they have been for generations. While festivities vary at each of the
14 plants, all will provide tours, displays, refreshments, and other educational
and fun-filled activities.
-
Awards for Art and Poetry by New York City Schoolchildren; Tuesday,
May 8, 1:30 pm
Winners and participants in DEP's 14th annual Water Conservation Art and
Poetry Contest for the City's fifth and sixth graders will be honored, along
with their families, teachers and administrators, at a ceremony in the historic
Great Hall of Cooper Union at 1:30 pm. The winning entries of some of our
youngest water consumers will be on display.
-
Awards for Art and Poetry by Westchester County Schoolchildren;
Thursday, May 10, 6 pm
Winners of and participants in DEP's and Kensico Environmental Enhancement
Program's (KEEP) annual Water Conservation and Water Quality Preservation
Art and Poetry Contest for sixth and seventh graders will be honored along
with their families, teachers and administrators, at a 6:00 pm ceremony
in the Gottesman Room of the Kessel Campus Center of Pace University.
In addition, The South Street Seaport Museum in collaboration with the New
York City Municipal Archives is presenting an exhibition entitled Healing
Waters: Utopian Responses to Dirt, Disease and Disorder in New York, 1980-1940.
The exhibition examines the important role of water in New York City's efforts
to mold a modern city through universal indoor plumbing, improved sanitation,
improved health and hygiene facilities and expanded recreational facilities.
Healing Waters is on display at the Museum's Melville Gallery
at 213 Water Street, daily from 10am-5pm. The Museum's phone number is (212)
748-8600. Admission is free for children under 12 and $5.00 for adults.
