Women's History Month – Suneydis Martinez
Suneydis Martinez’s real passion is law. An Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Commissioner in DEP’s Office of Information Technology, she started at DEP in high school, working while attending classes. She continued to split her time between DEP and school during college, graduating from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice with Honors in December, 2005 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.
As part of her degree work, Suneydis interned at another City agency, the Department of Probation, Queens, which prompted her to apply to law school. She would one day like to offer legal aid to those whose financial difficulties would otherwise prevent them from obtaining proper representation.
At DEP, Suneydis’s daily work includes co-coordinating administrative activities for the Assistant Commissioner and serving as a procurement liaison. Her advice to future generations is to “open your eyes to the world around you.” To do this, she recommends spending time unplugged from the technological world and learning to reflect on important goals and dreams. For Suneydis, family and education should become the compass for these ambitions.
