Rockaway Beach Opened
for Surfing
DEP Commissioner Emily Lloyd joined Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe at Rockaway Beach on Earth Day 2005 to help celebrate the opening of the City's first beach for surfers. Commissioner Lloyd was proud to announce that the waters in New York Harbor are cleaner today than at any time since the City began monitoring 95 years ago. The rainy day was also a perfect backdrop to show off a new sign for the City's "Clean Streets = Clean Beaches" campaign, because while you don't go to beach when it rains, your litter does.
